The transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) family and pulmonary fibrosis

Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) isoforms have profound roles in all forms of tissue repair and regeneration. In this review, we examine the role of TGF-βs in pulmonary fibrosis. We examine the possible sources of TGF-β, and how this factor signals via receptors through the Smad pathway. The link between inflammation and fibrosis is also examined. Understanding the role of TGF-β family members in fibrosis is vital to understanding how to develop novel treatments to slow or to reverse pulmonary fibrosis.
