Can food-derived multipotent agents reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease

Since multiple factors are implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), there is growing interest in finding multi-targeted agents to treat the disease. Thanks to the continuing efforts of medicinal chemists, some multipotent anti-AD agents have been created by rational design or extracted from herbal medicines. Recently, some epidemiological studies revealed that high consumption of specific foods (including beverages) is inversely associated with AD incidence. Thus, it is interesting to explore whether these foods also contain multipotent AD-preventive agents. Through summarizing the data accumulated so far, we show here that a variety of anti-AD agents indeed have been identified from foods, most of which hold multiple pharmacological effects.
