Implementing radiotherapy in Africa: Focus on the needs in Rwanda

Cancer care is a concern in low- and middle-income countries. The needs of structure to treat patients are huge. Because of the cost of radiotherapy, and the need for highly specialized workers, providing radiation therapy in these nations is a challenge. However, some solutions exist that can dramatically improve future care. In this article, we reviewed the plight of cancer treatment organization in Africa, and more specifically, the status of radiotherapy needs and concerns within Rwanda.

RésuméLes soins en cancérologie sont un sujet de préoccupation dans les pays à faible revenu et ceux à revenu intermédiaire. Les besoins en termes de structures mais aussi de formation sont extrêmement importants. La radiothérapie, par ses exigences, cumule des besoins financiers qui peuvent paraître rédhibitoires à des pays aux revenus limités. Cependant, ce traitement est primordial dans la prise en charge des cancers et des solutions existent et peuvent améliorer considérablement les soins à venir. Dans cet article, nous avons examiné, en Afrique, la situation de l’organisation du traitement du cancer et particulièrement celle de la radiothérapie et nous avons focalisé certaines données concernant le Rwanda.
