Comparison of two topical remedies in treating otitis externa in cats: A randomized blinded trial

SummaryThirty cats presenting with an otitis externa were treated by the application of a topical ear remedy. The first group received a compound made up of an antibiotic, an antifungal and a strong-action corticoid, dexamethasone, once daily for a week (Group A – Aurizon®). The second group received a topical remedy based on an antibiotic, an antifungal and a weak-action corticoid, prednisolone, twice daily for one week (Group B – Surolan®). The animals were assigned a clinical and pruritus score and cytological score, at the start of treatment and on Days 3 and 7. An improvement was observed in all the animals. Statistical comparison of the criteria for efficacy between the two groups showed no significant difference relative to quantity of cerumen, auditopodal reflex and pruritus. A significant difference was noted in respect of erythema, favouring treatment A (p < 0.05). Statistical comparison of the efficacy criteria for the two groups showed no significant difference concerning the number of rods or of Malassezia. A significant difference was found in the number of cocci, favouring treatment A (p < 0.05). No secondary effects were observed in either of the two groups on Day 3 or Day 7.

RésuméTrente chats présentés pour une otite externe ont été traités par l’application d’un traitement topique. Un premier groupe a été traité par une association d’un antibiotique, d’un antifongique et d’un corticoïde de forte classe d’activité, la déxaméthasone, une fois par jour pendant une semaine (groupe A- Aurizon®). Le second groupe a reçu un traitement topique à base d’un antibiotique, d’un antifongique et d’un corticoïde de faible classe d’activité, la prednisolone, deux fois par semaine pendant une semaine (groupe B- Surolan®). Les animaux ont subi un score clinique et de prurit, et des examens cytologiques à l’inclusion, après trois jours et après sept jours. Une amélioration a été observée chez tous les animaux. La comparaison statistique des critères d’efficacité entre les deux groupes n’a pas montré de différence significative pour la quantité de cérumen, le réflexe auditopodal et le prurit. Une différence significative a été observée pour l’érythème en faveur du traitement A (p < 0,05). Aucune différence significative n’a été observée entre les groupes pour le nombre de bacilles ou de Malassezia à l’examen cytologique. Une différence significative a été observée pour le nombre de cocci en faveur du traitement A (p < 0,05). Aucun effet secondaire n’a été observé dans les deux groupes à j3 ou j7.
