Using quantitative methods of determining group membership to draw biological conclusions

• We develop a biological and mathematical definition for animal group membership.
• We provide example simulations demonstrating how the definition can be used.
• We compute common aggregation indices using the mathematical method we propose.
• Our method provides good estimates of animal grouping in many situations.
