This paper presents the design, analysis, and fabrication of a steel-reinforced hybrid GFRP (glass-fiber-reinforced polymer) deck panel that can be used to furnish the roadway surface of temporary bridges. Two hybrid cross-sectional profiles were proposed to increase the flexural stiffness of the GFRP deck panel, and the structural performance of the hybrid deck profiles was compared on the basis of finite element analysis. The results indicate that the flexural stiffness of the GFRP deck panel can be effectively increased by the proposed method of hybridization presented in this paper. The results and findings are summarized.
► Five-cell hybrid glass-reinforced-polymer deck panel was developed.
► Hybrid GFRP deck panel was reinforced with steel.
► Hybridization was effective to improve flexural stiffness of GFRP deck panel.
