Interruption sélective de grossesse

In France, screening for foetal abnormalities is currently offered to all pregnant patients and, when faced with a particularly serious abnormality, a medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) can be carried out. In the case of a twin pregnancy, the pregnancy cannot be terminated, therefore, the life of the twin carrying the serious abnormality must be terminated in utero and the pregnancy allowed to continue: this is known as a selective termination of pregnancy. Our study was carried out by an EMIS survey of European French-speaking multidisciplinary antenatal diagnosis centre (CPDPN) coordinators. We are interested, where one of the foetuses in dichorionic/diamnotic twin pregnancies is suffering from a particularly serious disease, in the practices of the professionals in these rare cases involving selective termination of pregnancy. The variability of practices is important, product of the variety of medical conditions and the discovery time of the serious disease, but also the readiness to take risks in relation to the healthy twin. This risk-taking accentuates the complexity of the medical decision. Sufficiently informing the patient is an objective that must be achieved as soon as possible: the information needs to be given orally but may be substantiated with a written document. Counselling is essential.
