Audit clinique en maternité : gestes à haut risque infectieux en salle d'accouchement

After a case of invasive group A streptococcal infection in the maternity department of a general hospital, a direct observational audit of hygiene practices in the delivery room after membrane rupture was conducted. It was specifically aimed at digital examinations and episiotomy repairs. The study included 39 digital examinations and 13 episiotomy repairs during 14 vaginal deliveries. A mask was routinely systematically worn for digital examination after the rupture of the membranes. Compliance with handwashing before vaginal examination after the rupture of the membrane was excellent. Practices during episiotomy suturing and antiseptic-use needed improvement. This study demonstrated the need to continue promoting infection control measures during vaginal deliveries and was an opportunity for the maternity department to initiate better quality work practices in the delivery room.
