Grossesse et tabac : pertinence d'un protocole de prise en charge du sevrage tabagique en consultation prénatale au CHU Arnaud-de-Villeneuve à Montpellier

The care of pregnant smokers is a public health priority. Midwives and practitioners should offer help in stopping smoking as of the first visit and during the entire pregnancy. For this purpose, a protocol was set up within the Montpellier maternity in collaboration with unité de coordination de tabacologie based on the international scientific data. It includes five main clinical areas: information about the existence of a consultation in tobacology and specific signing, the detection of nicotinism, routine access to withdrawal, the training of the health personnel and the assessment of practices. After one year, the assessment shows that the number of consultations in tobacology within the maternity multiplied by four compared with 2006 and the number of consultations at the patient's bedside increased tenfold. The percentage of smokers at childbirth decreased from 22% in 2003 to 17% in 2007. The professionals claim to be more comfortable in informing and orienting smoker patients.
