For patients traveling to developing countries, there is real concern regarding exposure to malaria. Approximately 40% of the world's population is at risk of malaria, but studies suggest that only 36% of those traveling outside of the United States seek the advice of a primary care provider. At times, the provider is unsure what preventive measures need to be taken. Malaria is preventable, and the nurse practitioner can help the patient minimize the risk for exposure with the proper counseling and planning.
