SummaryThe Wessex Paediatric Neurovascular Assessment (WPNA) Tool is an instrument used by nursing staff to diagnose the early indications of neurovascular impairment that may precede compartment syndrome. The purpose of the study was to validate the tool, giving particular attention to content and structure, applicability in practice and accuracy. The study design used between-methods triangulation, using participant-as-observer with post observation questionnaire and retrospective data analysis. The results from the three methods used showed similarity, strongly suggesting convergent validity for the Wessex Paediatric Neurovascular Assessment Tool. Preliminary evidence suggests that the tool facilitates the early recognition of neurovascular impairment and compartment syndrome. Some proposed modifications to the Wessex Paediatric Neurovascular Assessment Tool have been identified that may further strengthen its validity.
