SummaryMany women present with fractures of the hip or wrist each year as a result of osteoporosis. Whilst appropriate treatment for the particular injury is carried out, little or nothing is done with regard to the osteoporotic state of the bones. As a result, major costs are faced by the health service. This study investigates the knowledge levels of females aged 55 and over about the effects, risk factors and prevention of osteoporosis. A descriptive survey design and a convenience sample of 60 female orthopaedic patients were used. Data was collected with a questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics. Findings indicated that the women displayed a low level of knowledge with regard to the subject matter. One recommendation is for the prevention of osteoporosis to be identified as a priority health initiative by health services. If women are made aware of the effects, the risk factors and preventative behaviours associated with osteoporosis, they may engage in self-care behaviours that will help prevent osteoporosis.
