Vertical Transmission of Human Papillomavirus From Mother to Fetus: Literature Review

Although the nature of human papillomavirus (HPV) makes it difficult to eradicate, great strides have been made in minimizing the long-term effects with the advent of a vaccine and education. The main mode of transmission of HPV is through skin-to-skin contact, but it has been noted that sexually naïve individuals have tested positive for HPV. This literature review explores vertical transmission of HPV from mother to fetus. An extensive review of Cochrane Library, PubMed, SCOPUS, and journal articles published between 2000 and 2010 confirms that vertical transmission of HPV from mother to fetus is possible.
