Best Practice for Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis

Much has been written about the impact of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) on the current health system. Recommendations have been developed and implemented for prophylaxis and treatment of DVT, but in spite of these, it continues to significantly contribute to patient morbidity and mortality, creating a large burden on people and systems. Despite evidence available from numerous trials of thromboprophylactic methods comparing anticoagulants and mechanical therapies, debate still exists about what is the safest and most cost-effective intervention. If used appropriately, prophylaxis prevents the hospital and patient from costly diagnostic procedures and prolonged anticoagulation therapy.
