This paper indicates the need for prudent diagnostics of early brain lesions in newborn. Evaluation of a premature baby should be related to post conceptual age, taking into account age norms as well as the existence of transient forms during the child's functional development. The author focuses on specific features of neurological assessment at different ages up to the age of 2. She also emphasizes the role of tactile and emotional stimulation in acquisition of skills, first done by the mother and at a later age by the child's own motivation.
