Impact d'un programme multimodal pour améliorer les soins aux patients porteurs de cathéters veineux centraux dans un hôpital tertiaire

Complications linked to central venous catheters, particularly bacteraemia, increase morbidity and suffering. To improve patient care, multidisciplinary programs are currently recommended. This article presents the nursing side of such a program and describes a structured continuing education program based on evidence-based data in a tertiary hospital. Over 950 nurses were educated in five months with an approach based on an audiovisual media and peer training. Today, this training is offered to all new personnel and tailored training is available upon demand for departments. Results show sustained nursing knowledge in the care of central venous catheters after 12 months. The impact on blood stream infection is maintained seven years after the beginning of this program.
