ObjectivesTo describe the factors that influence cognitive function in the context of cancer and cancer therapy, and to illustrate the complex nature of the problem.Data SourcesPeer-reviewed literature.ConclusionMultiple factors contribute to changes in cognitive function in this population, including demographic, psychological, and physiological factors, the disease itself, disease- and treatment-related symptoms, and the management of those symptoms.Implications for Nursing PracticeNurses’ recognition of the multiple factors that may influence cognitive function in patients with cancer should guide appropriate patient assessment. Appreciation of the complex basis of the changes in cognitive function in patients with cancer can provide direction for the appropriate management of the problem.
