Shortening and vertical shift at osteotomy of 1st metatarsal for hallux valgus-the effect on forefoot loading

When shortening was combined with upwards tilt at osteotomy, weight transfer to the lesser metatarsal heads became almost universal. When shortening was combined with downwards tilt at osteotomy, this load transfer was much less frequent.
