Bei technisch korrekter Durchführung ist oft ein eindeutiger Befund zu erheben, welcher dem Patienten weitere Untersuchungen erspart. Andererseits wird für viele Befunde, welche den Einsatz von CT oder MRT erfordern, bereits eine klare Fragestellung formuliert. Spezialprojektionen dienen insbesondere der intraoperativen Stellungskontrolle am Rückfuß. Bei chronischen Problemen werden prinzipiell Belastungsaufnahmen der Sprunggelenke und Füße im Seitenvergleich gefertigt. Gehaltene Aufnahmen in standardisierter Technik gestatten die Verifizierung und Quantifizierung von ligamentären Instabilitäten an Sprunggelenk und Fuß. Funktionsaufnahmen sind für spezielle Fragestellungen, am ehesten am oberen Sprunggelenk, reserviert.
