Status of novel tools for estimation of activation dose

Two novel tools for the estimation of activation dose in fusion devices based on the rigorous-two-step formalism are discussed and compared. The tools, one in-house and one commercially available, couple transport and activation calculations in an integrated manner and allow for very high spatial resolution. Benchmark exercises are reported; the accuracy of the commercial activation solver has been found to be similar to that of FISPACT. Comparison in a 1D problem with ITER-like irradiation conditions is made. Despite minor differences in input data and isotopic and photon output, activation dose results at several decay times and locations are within 20% of each other. The adequacy and completeness of the nuclear data of the commercial software is assessed against the well-established EAF data; recommendations are given for its improvement for generic fusion applications.
