Trajectory adjusting system using a magnetic lens for a Pb-coated superconducting IFE target

A new system is presented to adjust the trajectory of an inertial fusion energy (IFE) target in a reactor. The system uses a magnetic lens and a Pb-coated, spherical, IFE fuel targets cooled below 7.2 K. The magnets symmetrically placed in the midsection of the target injection path act as the magnetic lens. When the target passes through the magnetic lens, the target receives an impulse, which is proportional to the deviation from the axis of symmetry. This impulse focuses the target trajectory and minimizes the shot-to-shot variation of final target position. Numerical results of the trajectory focusing are presented.
