Œdème cérébral après shunt porto-systémique intrahépatique : cas clinique et revue de la littérature

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement has been widely performed for nearly two decades in the treatment of portal hypertension in patients with cirrhosis. Hepatic encephalopathy after TIPS is frequent but rarely severe; however, a risk of cerebral edema after TIPS does exist. We describe a case demonstrating the development of severe hepatic encephalopathy with cerebral edema, evolving towards brain death, as a complication of TIPS. In addition, we describe the development of the portal systemic encephalopathy with cerebral edema as consequences of TIPS in a patient with chronic liver disease.
