► Tau4 and Tau3 mRNA levels in the hippocampus increased 1 month after ovariectomy. ► Genes associated with amyloid plaques also increased but 4 months after ovariectomy. ► Significant cognitive impairments were first observed after 3 months of E2 deficiency.
