Apical ballooning syndrome precipitated by hyponatremia

Apical Ballooning Syndrome is a transient cardiomyopathy that mimics an acute myocardial infarction. It is predominantly seen in postmenopausal women and is often triggered by an emotional or physical stressful event. The pathophysiology remains to be established, but a surge in catecholamines may be an important factor. It is important for physicians to be familiar with the diagnostic criteria and typical triggers for the cardiomyopathy in order to make the diagnosis. The list of potential triggers continues to grow as the condition gains increasing recognition. We present two unique cases of ABS that were triggered by hyponatremia.
