The trend of increasing pacemaker use continued in 2009, reaching 729 units per million population. Pacemaker implantation was more frequent in males, who received them at a slightly younger age than women. Age was a more significant determinant of inappropriate pacing mode selection than electrocardiographic abnormalities. Active fixation of pacemaker leads was used in more than 50% of cases.
