ObjectiveThe aim of the article is to present a review of the actual state of knowledge on the cognitive and behavioural functioning of patients with epilepsy.ReviewEpilepsy is a heterogeneous condition so there is no fixed, defined profile of the cognitive impairment and behavioural disorders of patients with epileptic symptoms. The severity and type of neuropsychological deficits are related to factors such as the aetiology and semiology of seizures, and the duration and course of the disease. Most patients with genetically determined epilepsies may present very mild cognitive impairment. Patients with organic-metabolic focal epilepsies exhibit selective, specific brain pathology deficits. Most often these are deficits in memory and executive dysfunctions. Various emotional and behavioural symptoms are associated with epilepsy, such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders and psychotic symptoms.ConclusionsCognitive and behavioural deficits in patients with epilepsy are an important clinical issue. Therefore the assessment of a patient's neuropsychological and emotional state can be very useful in the diagnostic process and the planning and monitoring of therapeutic interventions.
