Pillcam ESO: A Primer

Capsule endoscopy has recently expanded beyond study of the small bowel. A modified capsule with dual cameras and a faster frame rate has been developed specifically to assess the esophagus. This esophageal capsule has been studied as a possible screening tool for 2 patient groups: 1) those with chronic reflux symptoms-to assess for possible esophagitis and/or Barrett's esophagus and; 2) those with chronic liver disease and suspected esophageal varices. The esophageal capsule may prove to be a useful alternative to traditional upper endoscopy given its ease of use, short study duration and performance without sedation. This chapter describes the techniques for performing this procedure, as well as advice on achieving optimal visualization and interpretation of the images. In addition, the current literature on its use is summarized and evaluated.
