ResumenAunque la preocupación médica por las infecciones del tracto urinario sufrió un retroceso durante los últimos años del siglo XX, esta tendencia, en la actualidad, muestra un patrón inverso debido en parte al importante incremento tecnológico de los últimos años, y al notable desarrollo del conocimiento sobre las relaciones que se establecen entre huésped y patógeno, y la reacción inflamatoria que da lugar a la aparición de cicatrices en el tracto urinario como secuela del proceso infeccioso. La comprensión de la patogénesis, el diagnóstico y el tratamiento de las infecciones del tracto urinario causadas por agentes bacterianos continúa siendo de importancia capital para la práctica clínica y científica del médico. Esta actualización pretende categorizar los diferentes tipos de infecciones urinarias bacterianas no complicadas, describir el progreso y tendencias actuales en su manejo diagnóstico y terapéutico y discutir los datos más recientes relacionados con su bacteriología e inmunología.

Although medical concern for urinary tract infections suffered a setback during the late twentieth century, this trend now shows a reverse pattern due in part to significant technological growth in recent years and the remarkable development of knowledge on the relationships established between host and pathogen, and the inflammatory reaction that leads to scarring in the urinary tract as a sequel to the infectious process. The understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infections caused by bacterial agents remains of paramount importance to the clinical and scientific medical practice. This article aims to categorize the different types of uncomplicated urinary bacterial infections, describe the progress and current trends in diagnosis and therapeutic management and discuss the most recent data related to ITS bacteriology and immunology.
