Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a common clinical syndrome that results from deficiency of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3). The diagnosis must be confirmed by biochemical testing. Primary hypothyroidism is indicated by a rise in serum thyrotrophin (TSH). Hypothyroidism is readily treated by T4 replacement, the aims of treatment being relief of symptoms and restoration of serum TSH to the reference range.
