Analysis of blood gases and acid–base balance

Regulation of the concentration of hydrogen ions is important for the maintenance of the function and integrity of cells. Many pathological processes impact on the ability to maintain homeostasis of hydrogen ion concentration. This contribution dicusses some of the concepts involved in the measurement of acid–base balance and blood gas concentrations.
