Penetrating thoracic trauma

Penetrating thoracic trauma is usually an urban crime that is best managed in a trauma centre. Frequently however, it presents to emergency departments without immediate access to a cardiothoracic service. This article aims to help the general surgeon and emergency room doctor provide definitive care or stabilize the situation until specialist assistance becomes available. Appropriate immediate intervention in this situation can reduce mortality and decrease longer-term morbidity. Reasons to involve a thoracic surgeon during the patient's recovery period are also discussed.
