Fractures of the carpus and hand

Fractures of the carpus and hand are common. Diagnosis and treatment is often simple and straightforward. At other times diagnosis can be difficult and, even with the best possible treatment, the outcome may be disappointing. This article describes a variety of carpal injuries with particular reference to the scaphoid fracture and perilunate fracture dislocation. This is followed by a description of bony injuries that can affect the hand: including fractures of the metacarpals and phalanges, crush injuries, avulsions, gamekeeper's thumb, and Bennett's fracture.
