Paediatric fluid and electrolyte therapy guidelines

Intravenous fluid management in children is important and requires an understanding of the basic science outlined here. Recent national guidelines from the NPSA aim to reduce the risks of hyponatraemia which most commonly have arisen from the inappropriate administration of low sodium containing fluids during resucition or for the replacement of deficits or in inappropriatly large volumes. Electrolyte abnormalities and their correction are summarised.
