Lanthanum carbonate is a new calcium-free phosphate binder, showing high potency and an acceptable safety profile. Monotherapy with fosrenol is recommended because of its demonstrated efficacy as a potent binder. A lower daily tablet burden compared with other phosphate binders may be associated with better long-term treatment compliance.
