Síndrome hepatorrenal

Among the possible complications of decompensated liver cirrhosis, hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) has the worst prognosis. There are two, well-defined clinical forms of this complication: HRS type 1 and HRS type 2. HRS type 1 is characterized by progressive impairment of renal function and has a very poor prognosis. HRS type 2 is characterized by worsening of renal function that remains stable and by a longer mean survival. In the last few years, HRS has been demonstrated to be reversible with medical treatment after placement of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS). Nevertheless, the only definitive treatment of HRS continues to be liver transplantation.
