Study ObjectiveTo present the indications and diagnosis in adolescents undergoing transrectal ultrasound (RU).DesignRetrospective chart review.ParticipantsAdolescents presenting to gynecology clinic between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2012.Main Outcome MeasuresDetection of RU, transvaginal, and transabdominal (AU) ultrasound indications, and final diagnosis.ResultsThe main indications for RU were menstrual abnormalities, pelvic pain-dysmenorrhea, and vulvovaginitis. When compared according to final diagnosis adolescents with vulvovaginitis (13.9%) and amenorrhea (8.3%) were evaluated more with RU.ConclusionRU is highly acceptable and it provides images superior to AU. It can be used in adolescents to visualize the pelvic organs and to exclude genital abnormalities and mass lesions.
