Outcome following surgery for hallux valgus: The patients’ perspective

Various surgical procedures exist for correction of hallux valgus. The patients’ perception is a key factor in the success of any such procedure. A review was carried out of 60 serial metatarsal osteotomies in 46 patients done in a period of 1 year. Factors affecting the outcome after hallux valgus surgery were evaluated. Patients’ evaluations of outcome were studied using a questionnaire. Amongst the 37 respondents (80.43%), outcomes were assessed with relation to appearance, pain, footwear, return to work and walking distance. Excellent or good results were achieved in 75.6% of the patients. The results in our series did not vary with the surgical technique employed. Other factors influencing the patient's perspective have been discussed. We conclude that the surgeon's experience should continue to be an important factor in choosing the type of surgery.
