(iii) Developmental dysplasia of the hip

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a spectrum of pathologies affecting the infant hip ranging from asymptomatic subtle radiographic signs through mild instability to frank dislocations with an abnormal acetabulum.Patients with developmental hip dysplasia account for around 10% of all primary hip arthroplasties, and around 30% in those under sixty. Early detection and appropriate management can prevent or delay the requirement for total hip replacement.In this article we aim to provide a broad overview of the aetiology, natural history, pathology and management of developmental dysplasia of the hip.
