Extensor Mechanism Allografting

Extensor mechanism disruption is one of the most devastating complications after total knee arthroplasty that may result in considerable functional loss, even after attempted reconstruction. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment with extensor mechanism allograft may optimize outcomes. This article reviews the etiology and diagnosis of extensor mechanism disruption, but most importantly reviews the details of surgical reconstruction using fresh frozen extensor mechanism allograft. The sobering reality is that despite meticulous techniques and adherence to established principles, functional limitations may persist in as many as one-third of cases.
