Stridor in a newborn caused by a congenital laryngeal saccular cyst

SummaryAmong the etiologies of airway obstruction in the newborn, congenital cysts are unusual. A 6-week-old baby was referred for evaluation of an inspiratory stridor that appeared 7 days after birth. A diagnosis of obstructive upper laryngeal mass was made through a transnasal fiberoptic laryngoscopy. Direct laryngoscopy confirmed the presence of a large cyst in the right aryepiglottic fold. Complete excision was made via a cervical approach through the thyrohyoid membrane. Histopathology examination confirmed the diagnosis of saccular cyst. A control fiberoptic laryngoscopy made 6 months later revealed a normal-appearing larynx. We discuss the possible treatment options of saccular cysts.
