Traumatic spinal epidural hematoma in a 1-year-old boy

SummaryTraumatic spinal epidural hematoma is uncommon in children, making rapid diagnosis difficult. In this report, we present a case of traumatic cervical epidural hematoma in a 1-year-old boy, diagnosed with computed tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Management was conservative and the lesion regressed spontaneously. The presentation in childhood is often nonspecific. MRI is the imaging modality of choice for diagnosing these lesions. Conservative treatment has to be considered in cases with a benign clinical course and provided that the patient is followed up neurologically with repeated MRI.

RésuméL’hématome épidural rachidien est rare chez l’enfant et de diagnostic difficile. Nous rapportons un cas d’hématome épidural traumatique chez un enfant d’un an, diagnostiqué par tomodensitométrie et imagerie par résonance magnétique. La prise en charge a consisté en un traitement conservateur et l’hématome a régressé spontanément. La présentation clinique de cette affection chez le nourrisson est souvent non spécifique. L’imagerie par résonance magnétique est l’examen diagnostique de référence. Un traitement conservateur doit être envisagé en l’absence de symptomatologie neurologique déficitaire, sous surveillance clinique et radiologique.
