Ses indications potentielles se sont étendues progressivement à un nombre considérable de situations, notamment en prophylaxie pulmonaire (mucoviscidose, dilatation des bronches, bronchopneumopathies obstructives). Néanmoins, les risques liés à son utilisation sont importants notamment par son pouvoir sélectionnant.
