Lung cancer surgery must be performed by qualified surgeons, working in authorized establishments with a sufficient case-volume activity, and participating in the prospective collection of their results by the national register of the French Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. The standard surgical approach is an open thoracotomy. The lung resection consists at least of a lobectomy associated with a systematic lymphadenectomy in patients at standard surgical risk. The current risk of postoperative death is lower than 5%, and the probability of survival at 5 years is greater than 50% in patients with early stage disease.
