Random insertion of split-cans of the fluorescent protein venus into Shaker channels yields voltage sensitive probes with improved membrane localization in mammalian cells

► Split cans of FP (venus) were inserted into many locations of K+ channel subunits. ► These were expressed pairwise in HEK293 and NI115 cells. ► This procedure often resulted in improved membrane localization of the fluorescence. ► The largest fractional change was −1.4% in ΔF/F for a 100 mV depolarization.
