First detection of taste buds in a chimaeroid fish (Chondrichthyes: Holocephali) and their Gαi-like immunoreactivity

► Taste buds have been detected in the tongue of the holocephalan Chimaera monstrosa. ► The G-protein-α-inhibitory subfamily seems conserved from mammals to holocephalan. ► Commercial antibodies to G-α-i are likely to work also in holocephalans. ► Taste buds of C. monstrosa are Gα-i-like immunoreactive. ► This is the very first detection of taste structure in the holocephalan subclass.
