Forest restitution and protected area effectiveness in post-socialist Romania

► Romania and the Carpathians are of outstanding importance for nature conservation. ► Socio-economic and institutional changes hamper protected area efficiency in Romania. ► We assessed effectiveness of Romanian protected areas using remote sensing techniques. ► We found substantial land-cover changes inside and outside protected areas in Romania. ► Results show that goals of Romania's protected area network are currently compromised.
