► I measured body temperatures in a tortoise from an arid, winter-rainfall region. ► In winter and spring, tortoises maintained high body temperatures. ► Mature females had particularly high temperatures in the reproductive seasons. ► To exploit winter-rainfall, the taxon may need considerable basking time.
