An Enterobacteriaceae species isolated from apples controls foodborne pathogens on fresh-cut apples and peaches

► The strain CPA-6 was isolated from minimally processed 'Golden Delicious' apple. ► It reduced E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella and L. innocua populations on fresh-cut apples and peaches. ► The lowest effective dose was 106 cfu mL−1 at both 5 and 20 °C and it seems not to be phytopathogenic. ► It was identified as new species belonging to Enterobacteriaceae. ► CPA-6 could be a suitable microorganism to control foodborne pathogens on fresh-cut fruit.
