Effect of the Yellow Sea warm current fronts on the westward shift of the Yellow Sea warm tongue in winter

► We presented a new index for the westward shift of the Yellow Sea warm tongue. ► We also presented a method to exactly determine the SST fronts. ► The fronts and compensating effects cause the westward shift of the warm tongue. ► The other dynamics indirectly modulate the westward shift via influencing the fronts.
