► Cucumbers expressing thaumatin II gene and non-transgenic counterpart field-tested. ► Growth, development and yield potential of 4 lines of 3 subsequent generations examined. ► Plant performance of 3 lines not limited by presence of thaumatin II gene. ► Thaumatin II protein accumulation progresses with fruit maturity. ► Total yield is more strongly affected by precipitation than air temperature.
